--------The Sunrise Hotel saved me, it is true.
When we arrived on our first day in Vietnam, amongst the jet lag and wonder at being in a new place I made one very big mistake; I had lost my passport. Checking into the hotel and sifting through my bags, no passport was to be found and my heart was in my stomach.
Swiftly the hotel desk clerk started making phone calls, and found it was in the driver’s car, and had it returned and brought to our room. The rooms are nice good size with AC, cable TV, mini-bar, big bed, nice furniture, balcony, tile floors, decent bathroom, and hot water. Free internet access in the lobby and the staff is very friendly. Be mindful that the hotel closes around midnight and does not open again until 7am, so if you wander down before 7am it is likely that someone from the staff will be asleep on the floor. They were also cheap, only $25 a night, and very clean- I never saw a single bug. The windows and doors are double layered helping keep the heat and noise of busy Hanoi streets out. The only issue we had with the room was the air conditioner condensed and dripped a little during a typhoon, but it was an easy fix just to stick a towel under it.
My second savior- at the end of our trip we came back to the Sunrise a night before flying out of Hanoi. The morning we were supposed to leave, we realized we had left our camera bag, with all 600 of our photographs, i-pod, and cell phones in the airport taxi. The hotel clerk calmed us and took my information. Two days after I got home, I had an e-mail from him letting me know that airport security had found it and would send it to me.
He really was a lifesaver- or at least a trip saver.
One last thing, this is the Sunrise Hotel on 9 Hang Mam Street. Make sure and check the street name, because we had a cabbie try and take us to another place claiming to also be the Sunrise.
